A 67-year-old male who was also suffering from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus got a new lease of life after he was timely treated and successfully cured for Acquired Aplastic Anemia (AA), a rare, life-threatening blood disorder. The condition causes when the body stops producing enough new blood cells. The international patient was based out of Germany had been consulting for suspected Aplastic Anemia at Dhaka, Bangladesh and received multiple blood transfusion in last 6 months.
The patient was referred to American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Nangia Specialty Hospital, Nagpur, for treatment by leading Hemato-oncologist and BMT Specialist Dr. Shailesh Bamborde. The patient Ajit Patil (name change), presented with anemic symptoms and bleeding into the skin. After further evaluation and investigation, he was diagnosed with Acquired Aplastic Anemia. Considering the age factor and in consultation with his family, he was promptly treated with Antithymocyte Globulin (ATG) along with Oral Cyclosporine and Eltrombopag without any complication.

Explaining the serious condition of the patient, Dr. Shailesh Bamborde, BMT Specialist at AOI Nagpur said, “Bone marrow transplant is a cure for aplastic anemia in young adults. However, the treatment in the older patients is ATG along with Cyclosporine and eltrombopag which is challenging to give with comorbidities. The patient is doing well and now transfusion requirements have been decreased.”
Aplastic Anemia (AA) is a rare blood disorder. This serious condition is a type of bone marrow failure syndrome. The springy tissue inside the bones (bone marrow) does not produce enough white blood cells (leukopenia or neutropenia), red blood cells (anemia), or platelets (thrombocytopenia). Usually, acquired aplastic anemia occurs because an immune trigger damages the stem cells. It can develop at any age and occur suddenly, or it can come on slowly and worsen over time. The condition could be manageable, mild, or severe.
