American Oncology Institute (AOI) at BMH, Calicut gave a new lease of life to a young 33-year-old patient suffering from type II diabetes and rectum cancer. The entire treatment schedule was performed with extreme precision under the guidance of a team of Senior Oncologists. (Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and at American Oncology Institute and Surgical Oncology at BMH). The radiation oncology team consisted of Dr.P.R.Sasindran, MD, Radiation Oncology, AOI, and Dr. Dhanya K.S., MD, Radiation Oncology, AOI.
Rajesh Nair (name changed) was suffering from advanced growth in the rectum with a medical history of type II diabetes. After a thorough evaluation and investigation, the patient was advised to undergo radiation and chemotherapy followed by Sphincter Preservation Surgery. Due to the critical location of the tumor, it was crucial to preserve the continuity of the bowel and the function of the anal sphincter.
This surgery is challenging in male patients, due to the complicated position of the rectum and narrow pelvis. Important nerves are present in this area and any injury might have a lasting impact on the patient’s life. Due to the aggressive nature of the disease and the young age of the patient, concurrent chemoradiation therapy was given for a considerable reduction in the size of the tumor.
The patient is now on regular follow-ups and successfully runs a clinic in Malappuram, Kerala.
