Risk Factors

Risk factors for ureteral cancer include:

• Smoking tobacco increases the risk of ureter or renal pelvic cancer, and risk increases with prolonged smoking
• Consuming herbal supplements containing aristolochic acid
• Underlying urinary diseases, such as chronic kidney disease, kidney infections, or kidney stones
• Presence of Lynch syndrome
• Prior exposure to radiation therapy in the abdominal or pelvic area
