Mangalagiri, 23rd May 2024 – American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Mangalagiri has successfully performed a limb salvage surgery for a 42-year-old female patient diagnosed with recurrent synovial sarcoma (SS) of the right forearm. It’s a rare form of cancer that affects the tissue around your joints. It typically appears in your hips, knee, ankle or shoulder.
The patient had previously undergone three surgeries at various hospitals, all of which had recommended hand amputation and considered further surgery impossible. The patient’s journey at AOI in Mangalagiri began with two chemotherapy treatments, after which Dr Eshant Inapuri performed the complex surgery. The operation showed that the tumor had spread to the muscles, nerves, and blood vessels in the right forearm. Tumor thrombus in vein and artery is being extending until the 1cm below the bifurcation which has been removed successfully with good margin. Despite these challenges, the surgical team successfully removed all the affected parts while saving an important nerve (median nerve and radial nerve) in the forearm. Vascular reconstruction and nerve reconstruction was done.
Dr Eshant Inapuri, Surgical Oncologist at AOI, elaborated on the procedure, "The complexity of this case required meticulous planning and execution. We were able to perform a complete wide excision of the tumor, ensuring it was free from the median nerve and radial nerve. The neurovascular reconstruction involved using the patient’s left leg saphenous vein for artery reconstruction and the left leg sural nerve for ulnar nerve reconstruction. The patient’s resilience and the team’s expertise played crucial roles in the success of this surgery."
Mahendra Reddy, Regional Chief Operating Officer at AOI, added, "This case highlights AOI’s commitment to offering advanced surgical options and hope to patients with challenging diagnoses. Our multidisciplinary approach and use of cutting-edge techniques make it possible to achieve such remarkable outcomes. We are dedicated to providing the highest standard of care and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in oncology treatment."
The patient is fully recovered, her prognosis is good and hand movement are normal, undergoing physiotherapy. This successful surgery highlights AOI's dedication to providing innovative and patient-centered care, offering new hope to those facing complex cancer diagnoses.
