Imphal, 13th Dec 2023 – American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Imphal, the pioneering cancer hospital in Manipur state, shares a significant milestone in cancer treatment with a recent case involving a 76-year-old female. The patient, presented with a painless swelling in the left side of the mouth measuring upto 4cm X 3cm X 3cm, faced difficulty in chewing food for two months. Her past medical history included chemotherapy treatment for Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia (a rare type of slow-growing blood cancer) in 2017.
Under the proficient care of AOI, routine investigations followed by advanced imaging and biopsy reports confirmed a diagnosis of Low-grade B cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) affecting the oral cavity. Considering treatment options, the patient was apprised of the benefits of Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), facilitated by the state-of-the-art Halcyon machine.
IMRT, a specialized precision radiotherapy technology, emerged as the preferred choice for its ability to shape radiation fields precisely, sparing surrounding sensitive organs. This technology significantly reduces common radiation treatment-related side effects, offering enhanced comfort and long-term benefits. The patient opted for IMRT treatment at AOI, foregoing plans to seek similar treatment at other distant centers. The treatment process commenced with meticulous simulation, CT imaging, contouring of target volumes, and rigorous treatment planning, ensuring optimal precision and effectiveness.
Dr Dhaneshor Sharma, Radiation Oncologist, American Oncology Institute, Imphal, commented, "This case exemplifies the efficacy of IMRT technology in providing exceptional local treatment response with minimal side effects for NHL involving the oral cavity. Our hospital's commitment to delivering advanced and comprehensive cancer care closer to home has significantly benefited patients facing challenges in accessing quality treatment outside the region."
Administered with a very low radiation dose over 20 days, the patient experienced remarkable progress. Throughout treatment, negligible side effects were encountered, and there were significant improvements in chewing comfort. On completion of the radiation therapy, an 80% reduction in tumor size was observed.
Dr Amit Dhawan, RCOO, AOI Imphal, stated, “American Oncology Institute in Imphal marks a significant achievement in cancer care with the successful treatment of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma using state-of-the-art IMRT technology. This case showcases the effectiveness of precision therapies available at AOI in delivering exceptional outcomes with minimal side effects. Our commitment to offering advanced and comprehensive cancer care locally is transforming access to quality treatment for patients in our region.”
Three months post-treatment, clinical evaluation via PET-CT scan confirmed complete eradication of the disease, achieving a 100% reduction in the oral cavity swelling. The patient's general health and nutritional status notably improved, and she did not exhibit common radiation therapy-related side effects.
AOI, Imphal continues its mission to bridge gaps in cancer care, addressing challenges related to geographic barriers, and cultural differences. The hospital remains steadfast in its dedication to providing high-quality, accessible, and cutting-edge cancer treatment.
