Stage 1 :
Cancer cells are limited to the innermost layer (mucosa) of the anal canal.
Stage 2 :
The tumor is less than 2 cm.
Stage 3 :
The tumor is of any size and spreads to lymph nodes and nearby organs or spreads to distant organs, such as the liver or lungs.
Stage 4 :
The tumor is <5 cm and spread to surrounding lymph nodes, OR the tumor is of any size and spread to surrounding organs, such as urethra, vagina, or bladder, but not spread to lymph nodes OR tumor of any size spread to the surrounding lymph nodes and nearby organs.
Stage 5 :
The tumor grows more than 5 cm and does not spread to the nearby lymph nodes
