In practice, at most well-resourced cancer centers, complex cases are formally reviewed by a multidisciplinary tumor board, a regularly scheduled meeting where specialists from different fields come together to discuss a specific patient's case and reach a collective recommendation. This process is one of the less visible but genuinely important structures behind modern cancer care.
Understanding what a tumor board actually is, and asking whether one's own case has been or will be reviewed by one, can be a useful and reasonable question for patients navigating a new diagnosis, particularly for less common or more complicated cancers.
