Origin: Epithelial tumors start on the outer surface of the ovary. Germ cell tumors begin in the egg-producing cells inside the ovary.
Age of Onset: Epithelial cancer typically affects postmenopausal women. Germ cell tumors predominantly affect adolescents and young women.
Frequency: Epithelial tumors are the most common form of ovarian cancer. Germ cell tumors are quite rare.
Treatment Focus: While both utilize surgery and chemotherapy, treating germ cell tumors places a heavy emphasis on preserving a patient's future fertility.
