Neuroblastoma is a cancer that develops from immature nerve cells, most often in the adrenal glands sitting atop the kidneys, though it can arise anywhere along the sympathetic nervous system, including the neck, chest, abdomen, or spine. It is the most common cancer diagnosed in infants under one year of age and one of the more unusual cancers in medicine, because its behavior varies enormously from one child to another: some tumors, especially in very young infants, can shrink or disappear on their own, while others grow aggressively and spread widely.
Because neuroblastoma often develops in babies too young to describe symptoms, recognizing physical signs becomes especially important for parents and pediatricians working together.
