How Chronic Inflammation Is Linked to Cancer Development

Inflammation is one of the body's most important defence mechanisms. When you cut your finger or catch a cold, inflammation brings immune cells to the area, fights germs and starts repair. Once the job is done, it switches off. Problems begin when inflammation does not switch off. Chronic, low-grade inflammation that lasts for months or years can quietly damage tissue and create conditions in which cancer is more likely to develop. Scientists now recognise this link as an important piece of the cancer puzzle.
