Germ cell tumors (GCTs) are a specific type of growth that can occur in people of all ages, though they are most frequently observed in adolescents and young adults. While the terminology may sound complex, the outlook for patients with these tumors has improved significantly over the last few decades due to advancements in medical oncology and surgical precision.
Germ cell tumors originate from the cells that create reproductive cells—sperm in males and eggs in females. Because of this origin, the vast majority of these tumors appear in the gonads (testicles or ovaries). However, in rare instances, they can develop in other parts of the body, such as the chest, abdomen, or even the brain. These are known as extragonadal germ cell tumors.
