The bones are one of the most common places for cancer to spread. When cancer that started elsewhere, such as in the breast or prostate, travels to the skeleton, it is called bone metastasis. This is different from cancer that begins in the bone itself. Bone metastases can cause pain, fractures and other complications, but modern treatments can control symptoms, protect bone strength and help many people live well for years.
