Bone Marrow Transplant: Types, Procedure & Success Rate

A bone marrow transplant (BMT), also called a stem cell transplant, is a specialised treatment used for certain blood cancers and non-cancerous blood disorders. Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue inside bones that produces blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. When the marrow is damaged by disease, chemotherapy, radiation, or a genetic problem, it may no longer produce healthy blood cells. In such cases, replacing it with healthy stem cells can restore normal blood formation.
