Vijayawada, 17th Jan 2024 – American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Mangalagiri, Vijayawada, achieves a significant milestone in the field of oncology with the successful treatment of a rare case of uterine leiomyosarcoma, a malignancy accounting for less than 5% of uterine cancers.
A 42-year-old female, presented with abdominal distension and pain persisting for a month. Upon evaluation, an MRI revealed a sizable 20x19cm mass originating from the uterus, displaying high vascularity. Biopsy results confirmed leiomyosarcoma of the uterus. Complicating the scenario, the patient had suffered a left femur fracture due to a fall at home, leading to left hemiarthroplasty.
Managing this patient proved challenging, considering a performance status of 2 post-surgery, leucocytosis, hypoalbuminemia, anemia, and electrolyte imbalances. Despite the patient's high surgical risk due to multiple factors, including the recent femur surgery, the team proceeded with a hysterectomy surgery.
