American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Mangalagiri Successfully Performs Life-Saving Surgery on 12-Year-Old Using Expandable Custom-Made Megaprosthesis

Vijayawada, July 26, 2024 – American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Mangalagiri, Vijayawada attains yet another milestone by successfully performing a life-saving surgery on 12-year-old boy. The case, managed by Dr Eshant Inapuri, marks a significant achievement in paediatric oncology care at AOI.

Akhil diagnosed with osteosarcoma on the lower part of the thigh bone, near the knee (right distal end of the femur). Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that typically starts in the cells that form bones, most commonly affecting the long bones in the arms or legs, especially around the knee. Three months ago, Akhil was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and had undergone three cycles of chemotherapy at an outside facility. However, due to the complexity of the case, limb salvage surgery was not deemed possible, and the patient was advised to undergo amputation.

Dr Eshant Inapuri, Surgical Oncologist, AOI Mangalagiri, said, "Limb salvage surgery with a custom-made prosthesis was the best option for this young patient. The fact that we could save his limb and provide a solution that accommodates his future growth is incredibly rewarding. This outcome demonstrates the power of combining clinical expertise with advanced medical technology."

The patient’s parents sought a second opinion at AOI's Mangalagiri facility, where Dr Eshant Inapuri conducted a thorough evaluation, including a PET-CT scan. The scan revealed that the disease was confined to the locoregional area (right distal femur), making limb salvage surgery a viable option.

Dr Eshant Inapuri and his team planned the surgery using an expandable custom-made mega prosthesis (Titanium alloy), designed to replace the affected part while accommodating the child's future growth. During the waiting period for the prosthesis, the patient received a fourth cycle of chemotherapy at AOI Mangalagiri.

Harish Trivedi, CEO of CTSI - South Asia, added, "The success of this surgery highlights the importance of innovative solutions in paediatric oncology. At AOI, we are dedicated to advancing cancer care through cutting-edge technology and personalized treatment plans, ensuring that even our youngest patients have access to the best possible outcomes."

The limb salvage surgery was successfully performed, the affected part was removed and replaced with the expandable prosthesis. The surgery was completed without complications, and the patient’s recovery has been remarkable. The child was able to walk with the support of a walker by the 5th day of post-operation, and by day 15th the child can walk independently with minimal support and has regained full knee mobility.

Mahendra Reddy, RCOO of AOI's Andhra Pradesh region, expressed his pride in the outcome, stating, "This case exemplifies the advanced capabilities of AOI in providing state-of-the-art cancer care. Our ability to offer such sophisticated treatment options in Vijayawada is a testament to our commitment to delivering world-class healthcare locally."

The Titanium expandable custom-made mega prosthesis used in the surgery offers a significant advantage. As the child grows, the length of the operated knee can be adjusted to match the growth of the opposite limb, allowing up to 10 cm of lengthening over time, which is crucial for maintaining balance and mobility as the patient ages.
