Vijayawada, 10th June 2024 – American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Kanuru, Vijayawada, successfully treated a 54-year-old male patient who presented with severe abdominal pain and an infected umbilical hernia after having an appendectomy elsewhere. He was diagnosed with a low-grade mucinous appendiceal neoplasm, a rare type of cancer that originates in the appendix. It involves the growth of tumor cells that produce mucus. These tumors are considered "low-grade," meaning they tend to grow slowly and are less aggressive compared to high-grade tumors. However, they can still spread within the abdominal cavity.
The patient underwent cytoreductive surgery (CRS) to remove cancerous tissue from the abdomen, which included removing part of the colon. This was followed by Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), where the area was treated with heated chemotherapy to eliminate any remaining cancer cells. This complex procedure was carried out by a dedicated surgical team led by Dr Sreekanth Kotagiri and Dr Vijai Koduru, with the anaesthesia team comprising Dr Mrudula T. and Dr Uma.
HIPEC is a cutting-edge treatment that involves circulating heated chemotherapy within the abdominal cavity, directly targeting residual cancer cells and reducing the likelihood of recurrence.
