Myeloproliferative Neoplasia-Essential Thrombocytosis a Rare Blood Disorder Successfully Treated at American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Gurugram

Gurugram, 20th March 2024: American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Gurugram has achieved a significant milestone by successfully diagnosing and treating Myeloproliferative Neoplasia-Essential Thrombocytosis, a rare blood disorder, in a 65-year-old female patient. This condition is characterized by the excessive production of platelets in the bone marrow, which can lead to various complications, including increased risk of blood clots, bleeding, and abnormal blood clotting.

The patient had a history of hypertension, sought treatment at AOI Gurugram after experiencing persistent headaches and mild gum bleeding over a four-month period. Upon examination, the team observed her blood pressure was elevated, and she exhibited mild gum bleeding. Further investigation revealed abnormalities in her blood counts, indicating a condition called Essential Thrombocytosis. It refers to the specific subtype of myeloproliferative neoplasia characterized by excessive platelet production.

Dr AK Dhar, HOD, Medical Oncologist at AOI Gurugram, highlighted the significance of this case: "Essential Thrombocytosis is a rare condition that necessitates careful evaluation and specialized treatment. Genetic testing and bone marrow examination were instrumental in confirming the diagnosis, highlighting the importance of comprehensive diagnostic approaches.”

The patient underwent cytoreductive therapy, a treatment method that involves medications aimed at reducing the bone marrow's production of excessive platelets. This therapy helps mitigate the risk of complications associated with abnormal blood clotting, such as strokes and heart attacks.

Dr AK Dhar further explained, "Cytoreductive therapy, along with antiplatelet agents, plays a crucial role in managing Myeloproliferative Neoplasia-Essential Thrombocytosis, ensuring effective reduction of platelet levels and minimizing associated risks."

Dr Amit Dhawan, RCOO of AOI Gurugram, emphasized, "The successful diagnosis and treatment in our patient exemplify our commitment to addressing even the most challenging medical conditions. Essential Thrombocytosis is a rare hematological disorder, often presenting complex diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Our multidisciplinary team's expertise and collaborative approach were instrumental in navigating the complexities of this condition, ensuring the best possible outcome for the patient. This case serves as a testament to the importance of specialized medical care and highlights AOI Gurugram's dedication to delivering excellence in healthcare, particularly in managing rare and complex blood disorders."

Following treatment, including cytoreductive therapy and antiplatelet agents, the patient's platelet counts normalized, indicating successful management of the disorder.
