Jammu, June 27, 2023: American Oncology Institute (AOI) Jammu part of the leading cancer hospital chains in South Asia adds another accomplishment to its record by successfully performing a rare head and neck cancer surgery - Total laryngectomy with voice prosthesis for cancer of larynx, commonly known as voice box. A surgical team led by Dr Avinash Rajra, Consultant Surgical Oncology and Dr Sujeet Bhat, Consultant Surgical Oncology, and an anaesthesia team led by Dr Atul Sharma and Dr Khurram Malik, performed the surgery.
The surgery was performed on a 68-year-old male who was suffering from carcinoma of larynx. He had already received concurrent radiation therapy and chemotherapy from another hospital outside the state. But the disease had recurred in the larynx which required salvage with surgery which involved the complete removal of larynx along with reconstruction of neo-pharynx. Conventionally this would have implied that patient would lose his voice. After further evaluation and investigation, the oncologists of AOI recommended to insert Tracheo esophageal (TEP) voice prosthesis in the same setting to help preserve the patient’s voice.

TEP surgery with a prosthesis creates a path for air to move from your lungs to the esophagus. This air causes the top of the esophagus to vibrate -- producing a new tracheoesophageal voice. Considering the age factor and in consultation with his family, he was promptly treated without any complication. Patient have demonstrated expedited post-operative recovery in terms of swallowing and voice function as well.
