Jammu, 23rd Nov 2023: American Oncology Institute (AOI) Jammu marks a significant surgical milestone by successfully performing the removal of Synchronous Bilateral Breast Cancer (s-BBC) in two elderly female patients. This type of breast cancer, a rare occurrence representing merely 1%-3% of all breast cancer cases, was effectively treated by the medical team at AOI.
One patient, aged 70, presented with lumps in both breasts, diagnosed as cancerous upon evaluation. Simultaneously, a 72-year-old patient initially noticed a lump in one breast, later discovering a lump in the opposite breast, both confirmed as cancerous after thorough assessment.
Recognizing the urgency due to their age, one of the patients underwent Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS). Despite the complexity posed by bilateral tumors and the need for axillary dissection, the surgeon successfully removed both tumors while preserving the majority of the breast tissue, adhering to tumor biology and scan reports.
Dr Surbhi Kudyar, Consultant for Breast Services at AOI Jammu, emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in such cases. "Our collective expertise enables us to address unique patient challenges effectively. In these cases, our focus on tumor removal while preserving breast tissue led to successful outcomes," she stated.
Both patients exhibited remarkable post-surgery recovery, discharged within two days, and are presently undergoing follow-up care with hormonal therapy.
