American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Guntur Successfully treated a 3-year-old child with a large 5*4.4 cm Anaplastic Ependymoma.4 cm Anaplastic Ependymoma

Cancer tumor that forms when cells in the central nervous system (including the brain and spinal cord) begin to multiply rapidly

Guntur, 27th Nov 2023: American Oncology Institute (AOI) Guntur in Vijayawada successfully treated a 3-year-old child diagnosed with Anaplastic Ependymoma, a grade 3 CNS tumor. Anaplastic Ependymoma affects the central nervous system and manifests with symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, and weakness of limbs.

The child was presented with intermittent headaches, vomiting, and an MRI Brain revealed a sizeable lesion measuring, about 5*4.4 cm in size, located at the back part of the brain. This area was causing pressure on important parts of the brain. There was also a small amount of this abnormal area extending and affecting the balance and circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the brain and spinal cord.

The team of medical experts at AOI, led by Dr K. Sudhakar, Consultant Radiation Oncologist, and supported by Dr Sai Babu, Anaesthesiology, conducted an excision surgery at GGH. The Histopathology Examination (HPE) confirmed the diagnosis of Anaplastic Ependymoma Grade 3. After the surgery, another brain scan showed that the abnormal area had shrunk a lot, now measuring about 1.7 cm by 8 millimeters. They also noticed some fluid collected in the tissues at the back of the head, measuring about 4.3 by 2.4 cm.

Utilizing the cutting-edge Halcyon Linear Accelerator, renowned for its precision in delivering radiation therapy, the team effectively targeted the tumor area while minimizing exposure to surrounding critical organs at risk (OARs) such as the Brain Stem, Optic Nerve, and Temporal Lobe. This strategic approach was particularly crucial considering the child's age to mitigate potential neurocognitive and developmental impacts.

Dr K. Sudhakar, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at AOI, expressed, "The successful treatment of this young patient with Anaplastic Ependymoma highlights the importance of advanced technologies like the Halcyon Linear Accelerator in delivering precise and tailored radiation therapy. By minimizing exposure to critical areas, we aim to reduce the risk of neurocognitive and developmental disturbances, ensuring a better quality of life post-treatment."
