American Oncology Institute (AOI) Imphal’s Pioneering Approach Saved 50-year-old Woman Suffering from Breast Cancer

Imphal, 31st Oct 2023: American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Imphal saved a 50-year-old woman suffering from metastatic breast cancer, marking a remarkable victory for innovative cancer care. Under the expert guidance of Dr Brig A.K. Dhar and Dr Shibashish Bhattacharayya, the patient's journey from a complex medical history to complete recovery exemplifies the cutting-edge treatments available at AOI.

The patient arrived at the hospital last year with a history of triple-positive breast cancer, for which she had undergone right breast conservation surgery in 2013, followed by post-operative chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormone therapy. Breast conservation, also known as breast-preserving surgery, is a surgical approach to remove the cancerous tissue while preserving as much of the healthy breast tissue as possible. This is in contrast to a mastectomy, which involves the complete removal of the entire breast.

Four months prior to her recent visit, bilateral breast lumps resurfaced, instigating her return to medical care. A PET-CT scan on arrival revealed widespread metastasis in the bilateral breasts. Dr. Brig A.K. Dhar charted a comprehensive treatment plan that combined standard chemotherapy with targeted therapy, tailored to her unique medical condition. Additionally, specialized bone treatment was administered, initially stabilizing the disease. However, a few months into treatment, the patient faced a resurgence of bilateral breast masses and nipple discharge.

Dr Shibashish Bhattacharayya, Medical Oncologist, AOI Imphal explaining the treatment stated, "Breast cancer is a formidable adversary, challenging patients and healthcare professionals. The convergence of cytotoxic chemotherapy and targeted therapy allows us to address the disease at multiple levels, disrupting its progression and potentially offering more durable and effective solutions. This innovative treatment approach offers new hope to patients facing metastatic breast cancer. This remarkable success reflects the ever-evolving landscape of medical innovation and highlights our commitment to delivering pioneering healthcare solutions to our patients."

A subsequent PET-CT scan revealed disease progression. At this critical juncture, Dr Shibashish Bhattacharayya introduced an innovative approach, employing cytotoxic chemotherapy in conjunction with targeted therapy—a pioneering treatment offered for the first time in Manipur. The patient underwent six cycles of this therapy with exceptional results.

Dr Amit Dhawan, RCOO, AOI Imphal, stated, "At American Oncology Institute, our foremost commitment is to the well-being of our patients. We tirelessly strive to explore and implement innovative healthcare strategies that have a direct, positive impact on the lives of all patients within and around Manipur. Today, the patient stands fully recovered from her symptomatic breast lump, and recent PET-CT imaging confirms the complete eradication of cancer throughout her body. This extraordinary outcome not only renews hope for the patient and her family but also highlights the potential for groundbreaking treatments in the battle against metastatic breast cancer.
