American Oncology Institute (AOI), Guntur, Successfully Treats 9-Year-Old Child with Glioblastoma Multiforme, a Grade IV CNS Tumor

Guntur, 27th Jul 2023: American Oncology Institute (AOI) Guntur has achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully treating a 9-year-old child suffering from Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), a Grade IV central nervous system tumor. This aggressive form of brain cancer is known to cause severe symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, and weakness of limbs, and it requires immediate and specialized attention for effective treatment.

The young patient presented at AOI Guntur with intermittent headaches, morning vomiting, and right lower limb weakness that caused her to drag her foot while walking. Upon conducting an MRI of the brain, the medical team at AOI Guntur identified a sizeable lesion measuring 6.5x4.0cm in the right high fronto-parietal region, which was exerting pressure on the right lateral ventricle.

The initial surgical intervention, a right fronto-parietal craniotomy performed at an outside hospital, confirmed the diagnosis of GBM Grade IV. Post-operative MRI brain scans showed a residual tumor measuring 4.5x4.3cm in the right frontoparietal region, involving the body of the corpus callosum.

Under the expertise of Dr K. Sudhakar, Radiation Oncologist, and Dr Sai Babu, Anaesthesiologist, AOI Guntur the young patient was treated using advanced Radiation Therapy. The treatment was administered using the state-of-the-art Halcyon linear accelerator, which precisely delivered the radiation dose to the tumor while minimizing exposure to the surrounding critical organs at risk (OARs) such as the Brain stem, Optic Nerve, and Temporal Lobe. This approach is crucial for preserving neurocognitive and developmental functions, especially considering the child's young age.

"The successful treatment of this 9-year-old child with Glioblastoma Multiforme exemplifies AOI Guntur's commitment to providing cutting-edge and compassionate care to our patients," said Dr K. Sudhakar. "With the aid of the advanced Halcyon linear accelerator, we were able to target the tumor with remarkable precision, minimizing potential damage to critical brain structures and ensuring the best possible outcome for the patient."

The patient responded well to the radiation treatment, displaying significant improvements in her condition. She is currently able to carry out her academic activities without any abnormalities in her developmental progress after 3 years of post treatment.

Dr K. Sudhakar. added, "Witnessing this child's progress post-treatment fills us with immense joy and reinforces our dedication to advancing cancer care and providing hope to our patients and their families."

Mr. Mahendra Reddy, Regional Chief Operating Officer, expressed his appreciation for the multidisciplinary team's efforts. "At AOI Guntur, we strive to deliver comprehensive and personalized care to every patient we serve. This successful treatment is a testament to the collaborative approach and cutting-edge technology we employ in our fight against cancer."
