- Diagnosed with 15 cm x 13 cm massive heterogeneous mass in left Kidney -
Nagpur, 20th Sept 2023: A six-year-old bog from Sohagpur, Madhya Pradesh who was suffering from Wilms tumour, a very rare type of kidney cancer, was treated successfully by a team of Oncologists at American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Nagpur.
Four months ago, Raju (name changed) arrived at a local district hospital with swelling on the left side of his abdomen. However, he was unable to receive the necessary treatment and underwent repeated symptomatic treatment. This resulted in the increased swelling size, accompanied by pain and weight loss. Fortunately, when a former patient of Dr Nitin Bomanwar, Surgical Oncologist, at AOI suggested the patient’s family for treatment, the boy was thoroughly examined and evaluated. The abdominal CT scan revealed a huge heterogeneous mass of 15 cm x 13 cm in length and depth. Following a biopsy, the patient received a confirmed diagnosis of left nephroblastoma Wilm's tumor. It’s a rare kidney cancer that mainly affects children. This tumour affects kids between the age of 3 to 4 and becomes less common after the age of 5.
Considering the weak condition of the boy, he was promptly guided through a comprehensive chemotherapy treatment to reduce the tumor size weighing about 2 kgs. After completing the chemotherapy, the patient underwent surgery of left nephrectomy to remove the affected kidney.
Dr Nitin Bomanwar, Surgical Oncologist, American Oncology Institute, Nagpur, said, “As per the recent analysis, the annual incidence of renal tumours in India has been estimated to be 8.2 per million in children. The study estimates that the incidence rate stands at 8.2 cases per million children, amounting to approximately 3000 new cases each year. Renal tumors, although concerning, offer a glimmer of hope for affected children and their families. Solid renal masses need to be diagnosed at an early stage.
With proper and comprehensive treatment administered, the cure rates for this paediatric cancer are impressively high, ranging from 80% to 90%. Even in cases where the disease has progressed to an advanced stage, the cure rates can reach as high as 70%.”
The patient exhibited a cheerful demeanour and recovered well in the postoperative period. After spending seven days under close observation, he was discharged in stable condition. Today, the boy is thriving in good health and back to his cheerful self, engaging in playful activities with his friends, and has been steadily gaining weight.
