  • Blood transfusions are regularly carried out as an effective measure to prolong life. Blood Transfusion can replenish Hemoglobin and red blood cells level.
  • Iron Chelation or Chelation therapy is a treatment to remove excess iron which gets accumulated in the body due to regular Blood transfusions. Excess Iron can lead to severe damage to organs in the body. Iron Chelation is usually carried out after around 10 blood Transfusions.
  • Stem Cell or Bone marrow transplants are the only cure for For a stem cell transplant, stem cell from a healthy donor are given to the victim. These cells then start to produce healthy red blood cells replacing the cells affected by Thalassemia.
