Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men. It develops from cells in the prostate gland, a small walnut-shaped organ located below the bladder. Although prostate cancer can be slow-growing and some cases don’t require treatment, it’s important to know the early signs and symptoms so you can seek treatment if needed.

Common symptoms of prostate cancer include needing to urinate frequently or urgently, difficulty starting and stopping while urinating, weak flow of urine, and pain or burning during urination. Other signs may include blood in the urine, erectile dysfunction, and discomfort in the pelvic area. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatments available to treat prostate cancer, depending on the stage of the disease and your overall health. Treatment options may include chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiation therapy or surgery.

If you’re at risk for prostate cancer, it’s important to talk to your doctor about screening with a PSA test or digital rectal exam so that any potential problems can be caught and treated early. With early diagnosis and treatment, men with prostate cancer are often able to make a full recovery.
